"COLONSAY: COASTAL JOURNEY" - JENNY MASON
19th March – 30th April 2011
Jenny Mason is an Edinburgh based landscape painter whose work concentrates on remote landscapes and our northern skies, creating simple spare compositions from swaths of watercolour. She exhibits regularly at the RSW, and galleries in Edinburgh, Crieff and London.
In the autumn of 2010 Jenny was invited to the island of Colonsay, to be artist in residence for several weeks. Being the most westerly of the Inner Hebrides, Colonsay is on the very edge of Scotland and experiences dramatic weather conditions. Swells of boiling clouds can be seen on the horizon before the rain descends, but also perfect clear blue skies can come later the same day. Although wild and remote, there is something reassuring to us as humans in the endless movement of clouds in the sky and in the relentlessness of the sea, whether its a grey, drizzly day with low cloud or one with high winds and clouds rushing across the sky. It is never the same, never boring, and its takes one's attention off the cerebral and onto the visual wonderment of the world we inhabit.
This is Jenny's first solo show. In the body of work she has produced in response to her time on Colonsay, Oronsay and returning home via the Kintyre penisula she has created paintings that evoke the feelings of being in those remote landscapes.
