"BODY OF WORK" - Ingrid Bell

7th May - 2nd July 2011

Ingrid is showing a series of works representing the body as the container of all experiences.  Her reference point begins with her experience of growing up in the west midlands in the 1960's and 70's surrounded by an influx of families in the search of a better life.
Almost everyone on the street was an immigrant; Jamaican, Pakistani, West Indian, Irish, Italian, Hungarian, Austrian and Polish. There was no sense of community as each member of each generation was occupied with the complexities of integrating (or not) into Industrial Britain.

Ingrid uses the universal theme of loss and gain within the context of adaptation and integration; underlying elements of the multicultural experience.  Her research into the neurobiology of emotion and the felt but unseen emotions carried within the body is of on-going interest.

After graduating from art college in the south of England Ingrid was awarded a Monbusho scholarship to study woodblock printmaking in Japan, where she lived for two years. From here she travelled onto Denmark where she lived for ten years, with a break of two years living and working in Spain. It was her interest in art therapy that brought her to Edinburgh where she has now lived for the past fifteen years.
