My work is inspired by my response to places both remembered and imagined. Most significant are the wonderful effects of constantly changing light in the sky, on land, especially solitary places or wide open sea. I love the process of manipulating colour on the surface, applying paint on a textured ground, scraping through to capture a sense of wonder, surprise and magic. I aim to capture the essence of each landscape, allowing the viewer to absorb that atmosphere, have their senses stimulated and to be drawn to enjoy the spirit of the place, to wonder and wander.
Winifred Hodge was brought up in South West Scotland, studied teacher training in London gaining distinction in Art (Textiles). She studied wood engraving at Carlisle Art College under Christopher Cunliffe, and moved to Wensleydale in 1990. She paints in all mediums, exhibits work widely and is a popular tutor taking weekly classes in winter, courses in her studio in the summer months, in other parts of the UK and in Spain. A few pieces of work are reproduced to a high standard in print with an edition of only 30.
