Artists Statement:
Based primarily on the figure, my work looks at how the 'space' that surrounds people changes in different circumstances and with or without company. Family, friends and strangers are my models, as well as images from film and early photography.
For the past two years, I have been incorporating printmaking techniques into my work. I have developed a method which alternates screenprinting with painting, and which takes advantage of the many ‘accidental’ marks inevitably made during this unpredictable process. Using images from history (particularly Victorian photography and the World Wars), I am able to merge the past with the present, creating unexpected juxtapositions. I am also working with and inspired by text - be it extracts from poems, lists, or graffiti. By merging text with figurative imagery, I am able to exploit the unexpected ‘nonsense’ which words out of context can sometimes produce.
