Sarah Fountain
Statement of Work.
Sarah’s work takes inspiration from the visual elements which form cityscapes, she is drawn to the visual landscape of the urban environment and her interest and attraction to this landscape has developed from a literal visual representation of the city, to the use of "The City" as a concept and metaphor.
"The City" is a constant and developing undercurrent within Sarah’s work she uses "the City" to explore, reflect and scrutinize her relationship with contemporary social issues. These are specific to urban living or within a wider context, critiquing the principals of a capitalist society. The use of "The City" as a metaphor embodies a plethora of personal concerns observed and experienced over a lifetime of inner city living, such as social inequalities, the distribution of wealth, poverty, inner city/ghetto culture and living environments, personal experience and the day to day reality and banality of living within a city.
Starting with photography and found imagery Sarah begins to alter original images using digital manipulation and/or printmaking. She amalgamate numerous images with text, subverting and juxtaposing contradictory snapshots. By physically altering the image she changes it’s meaning. It is the subversion of imagery and objects that enables a dialogue to take place; Sarah’s relationship with the city, her observations and experiences and social problems are explored.
Sarah works within a variety of media: printmaking, photography, digital media and installation. These have taken the form of screenprints, lithography, photoetch, installation, large-scale digital prints and digitally manipulated imagery transferred onto ready-made and found objects.
