Douglas Gray was born in Kinghorn, Fife, in 1947. He studied at Kircaldy High School then at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, where he was awarded a Post Diploma year in Painting.
In 1970 he moved to London to study in the painting school at the Royal College of Art where he was awarded an M.A. He taught in adult education until 1976 then returned to Scotland.
In 1985, after a long break, he started painting and printmaking again. His prints, particularly the relief prints, have been exhibited widely and he has work in numerous private and public collections in Scotland, America and Japan.
In 1990 he returned from Edinburgh to Kinghorn where he has his own press. His subject matter is drawn from the towns, coasts, and seas around Fife.
